I am proud to be gay, says pop star Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin has two children with a surrogate mother. Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin has announced he is gay, ending years of speculation over his sexuality.

Martin, who has sold more than 60 million albums in a career spanning three decades, said on his website that he felt "blessed to be who he was".

He added that he had kept his sexuality hidden so far because advisers had told him coming out could hurt his career.

Martin, who fathered two children with a surrogate mother two years ago, said on his website: "Today I have accepted my homosexuality as a gift that gives me life."

He said his decision to write his memoirs had helped him to free "things that were too heavy to keep inside".

Martin began his career in the 1980s with the Puerto Rican boy-band, Menudo.

Kylie does Abba?

Kylie will join the line-up of glittering artists who will perform at the 'Thank You For The Music... A Celebration Of The Music of Abba' concert in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday 13th September 2009.

Kylie will perform two tracks at her only live UK appearance this year; the 1980 Number One hit 'Super Trouper', which was taken from the album of the same name, and 'When All is Said and Done', from Abba's final studio album The Visitors which was originally sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad in 1981. Kylie will perform this song accompanied by Abba's Benny Andersson.

Kylie says: "The opportunity to perform classic Abba songs on stage with members of Abba really is a dream come true. Their music has played such a great part in my life from a very early age and I'm thrilled I'll be able to share that with them personally."

Presented by Radio 2 Drivetime host Chris Evans, the gig will be broadcast live on Radio 2, with contributions from two members of Abba, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, and a performance by the full West End cast of the musical Mamma Mia!

Other acts set to perform include Lulu, Chaka Khan, The Feeling, Sharleen Spiteri, Jason Donovan, and Elaine Paige.

The BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Anders Eljas, will accompany the acts for the evening, which promises to be a very special and unique occasion.

The event will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 from 6.30-9.30pm so be sure to tune in!

Beginning October 30th, the world will have a front-row seat for Michael Jackson’s final concert, as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment release Michael Jackson's This Is It.

This Is It is being produced with the full support of the Estate of Michael Jackson and will be drawn from hundreds of hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage, captured in high definition with state of the art digital sound as the late singer was preparing for his concert series in London. The film, which will also offer select sequences in 3-D, will provide a unique career retrospective and feature interviews with some of Jackson's closest friends and creative collaborators.

The announcement was made by Michael Lynton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amy Pascal, Co-Chairman of the studio, Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, Chief Executive Officer of Sony Music Entertainment, and Rob Stringer, Chairman of Columbia/Epic Label Group, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment. The companies serve as the principal entertainment divisions of Sony Corporation.

Joining Sony in the announcement was The Estate of Michael Jackson, administered by his longtime attorney John Branca and veteran music executive John McClain, a Jackson family friend for more than 40 years. Proceeds the Estate earns from the film’s release will benefit the Michael Jackson Family Trust, the entity that Mr. Jackson specified in his will is to receive all of his assets.

The rights to the exclusive footage were acquired from AEG Live and The Estate of Michael Jackson. Sony Pictures and Sony Music will co-produce with AEG Live and the Estate, and Sony Pictures will distribute the film worldwide. Randy Phillips and Paul Gongaware of AEG Live will serve as producers of the film.

The majority of the film's footage was shot in June, 2009 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California, and The Forum in Inglewood, California, as Jackson prepared for "This Is It," the series of fifty concerts Jackson planned to present at the O2 Arena in London.

This Is It will offer Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer, his career, and the stage spectacular that would have been. The film will provide moviegoers with an unforgettable front row experience compiled from extensive footage that shows Jackson's meticulous preparation for his 2009 London shows.

Said Branca, “Our goal is to work with partners who treat Michael’s legacy with dignity and respect, while allowing us to substantially build the value of his estate for the benefit of Mrs. Katherine Jackson, Michael’s three children and the charitable causes that meant so much to him during his life. We are confident we found the right partners for this project in Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment. Sony and Michael enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial history together, and it’s only fitting that the relationship continues.”

Said McClain, “This film is not only a tribute to an artist who created excitement every moment he was on stage, but also is a fitting gift to the millions of fans worldwide who loved him and who he devoted his professional life to entertaining. John and I are thrilled to be working with Sony to build on Michael’s musical legacy in a way that will generate significant proceeds for his family and for children in need.”

"This historic recording of the last time he sang and danced on stage shows the legendary artist in an incredibly powerful way, with crystal clear images and sound. We understand the importance of producing a film that pays tribute to Michael as an artist, and are honored to work with the Estate of Michael Jackson to give audiences the gift of his final performances. I know this film will serve as further proof that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest entertainers who ever graced a stage."

"Michael lives on through his songs, his creative genius, his body of work and his passion for his art," said Rob Stringer. "He was a perfectionist on stage and through this unique film, audiences will be able to see, many for the first time, how much Michael poured into making his performances as special as they were perfect."

Said Kenny Ortega, director of and Jackson’s creative partner on the This Is It concert, “The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into this project. He was the architect of This Is It, and we were his builders. The footage that was captured from the early stages of the production to our technical rehearsals at the STAPLES Center in L.A. will show Michael as he truly was, creatively involved with every aspect of the production, from the staging and choreography, to the music, lighting, production design and conception of the original short films and video backdrops. It will also show Michael as one of the greatest entertainers in the world and one of the industry's most creative minds. This Is It was Michael’s last theatrical work and although it was still a work in progress, I think the footage will show that the process was something that Michael deeply enjoyed and that it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.”

British pop singer Robbie Williams will release his first album "Reality Killed the Video Star" in three years this November. For his new album Williams recorded and mixed songs with producer Trevor Horn in a studio in London. Horn has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney and Cher, and his old band The Buggles released the 1979 hit "Video Killed the Radio Star."

Until recently, Williams had been living in LA. He is reportedly now living in his hometown of Stoke since he left a U.S. rehabilitation center in March, 2007 when he was treated for prescription drug addiction.

With his new album comes a new site and new thoughts, and you can follow Robbie's doggy style adventures in Los Angeles.

P.s I am unshaven because of the vid (it's required)......I'm not growing the beard again...though once all the promo's done...the beard will make a come back and so will donuts...I had to fight off a peach cobbler the other night.

Lady Gaga graces the cover of Billboard Magazine this week!

As ever, she has a lot to say for herself, and let's not forget she is only the 3rs artist in history to have 3 #1 singles from a debut album.

Sprawled on her bed in an Amsterdam hotel, Lady GaGa is channeling Lady Godiva-sans the horse. While the 23-year-old has famously worn everything from Kermit the Frog to a hat made to resemble the solar system, today she's rocking the one constant in her ever shifting wardrobe-underpants. And nothing more.

But despite her dominance on the Billboard Hot 100 and bleached blonde hair, GaGa is not the average pop tart. She's an accomplished songwriter and performer who seems to have come out of nowhere, bursting from the corner of Ludlow and Rivington fully formed and fabulous. In conversation, she's chatty and articulate, but gives off the distinct sense she's 10 steps ahead of everyone else-while the Internet is still buzzing about the lampshade she wore over her face in a TV interview, she's plotting her next move.

Of course, if she invests wisely, she may never need to work again: Her debut album, "The Fame," which was released on Interscope, has sold nearly 1.3 million copies, and her biggest digital single, "Just Dance," has sold 4.4 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to writing all the tracks on her album, GaGa has previously written for Fergie, the Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block.

"Getting into writing for others happened naturally, because at the time, I didn't have a record deal," GaGa says. "I had a deal with IDJ that came and went, but that was it. I don't have an ego about other people singing my songs."

And-as surprising as it may seem amid her outre outfits and the nudge-nudge-wink-wink lyrics-GaGa's path from behind-the-scenes songwriter to cultural phenomenon was a smart, regimented plan. Before she was Lady GaGa, she was Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, an Italian Catholic schoolgirl from Yonkers, N.Y. She played piano and studied music as a child, but it wasn't until she hit her early 20s that her songwriting and performance style clicked. l "She wrote almost all her hits in a week," says Vince Herbert, who signed GaGa to his Streamline Records label, a joint venture with Interscope. "She flew to L.A. and sat in a studio with RedOne and just cranked it out."

Martin Kierszenbaum, who co-wrote four tracks on "The Fame," says she is "very focused and very fast. She doesn't like to sit around and waste time. When we tracked 'The Fame,' she sang everything in one take and spent about five hours on the harmony."

GaGa writes mostly at the piano, and to her, if a song doesn't come easily, it isn't meant to come at all. "A hit record writes itself," she says. "If you have to wait, maybe the song isn't there. Once you tap into the soul, the song begins to write itself. And I usually write the choruses first, because without a good chorus, who really gives a fuck?"

But before she had hit records, she was an apprentice songwriter, working with a number of producers and trying to build a name for herself. Jody Gerson, who signed GaGa's publishing deal with Sony/ATV, points out that she was driven to understand the publishing business from a young age. "She interned at Famous Music Publishing before any of this," Gerson says. "And even back then, she was famous for showing up for work in her undies."

GaGa says she doesn't want to be underestimated or written of as merely a pop songwriter. "I think most music is pop music," she says. "The mark of a great song is how many genres it can embody. It's about honesty and connection-look at a song like 'I Will Always Love You.' Whitney killed it as a pop song, but it works as a country song, a gospel song, everything. If I can play a song acoustic, or just on the piano, and it still works, I know it's good."

Gerson says that she and GaGa are both particular about who the artist will work with, especially with her current touring schedule. "She's swamped right now," Gerson says. "There is a lot of interest; we're talking to Adam Lambert right now, for instance. But it has to be a good match for her to spend the time."

She also says that she had faith GaGa would break out and become an in-demand writer and star. "She blew me away from the moment I met her," Gerson says. "She was already signed to Interscope, and we are so lucky to all be on the same page and have a great working relationship."

Gerson says the label agreed to shopping tracks to film and TV supervisors before the album was released. "We had over 25 placements before we had a hit. The networks and supervisors just loved her."

At this point, Gerson estimates songs from "The Fame" have been placed more than 100 times. "I'd say 'Just Dance' is the most requested, followed by 'Poker Face' and then 'The Fame,' " she says. "We've also had success with promo spots; 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich' was the song in all the promos for the show 'Dirty Sexy Money.' "

GaGa's crowning TV moment came in April, when she performed "Poker Face" on the "American Idol" results show. While the show helped boost her album sales (according to Nielsen SoundScan, "The Fame" sold 45,000 copies the week before the show aired, 51,000 the week it aired and 56,000 the week after), more important, it showed middle America that she was a bona fide pop star.

While placing GaGa's songs in a movie or TV is generally fairly simple, deciding whether to align her with big brands has been trickier. "She has such strong visuals and a sense of who she is," Gerson says. "We have to make sure any brand fits really, really well with her image."

Steve Stoute, head of the branding agency Translation, thinks GaGa herself is a brand. To that end, he has signed a deal with her and says he will treat her just like he does such clients as McDonald's or State Farm. "I don't just want to do deals for a check with her," he says. "She's at the point where she's bigger than life. She's transcended music."

Stoute says the deal is too new to reveal any specifics, but he plans to develop products as part of the GaGa brand. "We're going to bring new products to market and create magic. This isn't a matter of doing a fragrance deal or something. But whatever we do will be innovative and authentic, like her."

A few months ago, Lady GaGa decided to try a little experiment. "I was talking to the members of the Haus [her creative team] about the power of image and the camera, and I wanted to say something on a real level about fame," she says. "I drink a lot of tea, and I decided to take a purple teacup out of my china collection and take it to London and make it famous. I put it in videos and had fans pose with it and put it on TV-at one point, the teacup had a call time." It became the most famous teacup since Meret Oppenheim covered one in fur.

Not surprisingly, GaGa has a background in art history, which she studied for a while at New York University before leaving to pursue music and performance full time. "There is certainly a performance art element to all of this," she says. "I get challenged in interviews all the time, people asking me whether the clothes distract from the music. They're not separate; it's not one or the other. I dress the way I do to demonstrate my commitment to show business."

Though she doesn't speak to it directly, there is a sense that GaGa also is canny about using her wardrobe to keep her in the public eye. In the month of July alone, Perez Hilton's Web site mentioned her 13 times, almost always for her outrageous outfits. That rate is usually reserved for starlets going through rehab, involved in public breakups or falling drunkenly out of limos-and GaGa does none of this. Though she's admitted to using cocaine in the past, she seems to have realized that she can get just as much attention by slapping on a hat made of hair, without all the nasty side effects.

Herbert says that GaGa's image taps into something pop audiences were starving for. "She breathes, eats and sleeps being Lady GaGa," he says. "She gives the kids something new, and it's fun and healthy and positive. She does these epic videos and really great stage sets, and people appreciate that. You come to the show and see all these girls dressed like her."

Her manager, Troy Carter, says she's a throwback to "the days when artists were artists. She's an iconic figure, and it's not like she ever takes a day off and put on khakis and a T-shirt. She's in showbiz, and fans have been missing people like that."

GaGa says the whole identity stems from her belief in glamour. "I want to live the glam life, and my material is heavily rooted in that," she says. "There are all these places where art and self-expression and clothing can intersect. When I wore the Kermit outfit [called a "froschbluse" by German TV], it was a commentary on wearing fur. I also have a theme of monsters running through the rerelease, and I wanted to promote that."

"The Fame" will be rereleased in the fourth quarter, a year after it originally debuted. It originally arrived Sept. 9, 2008, to a mostly positive critical reception, but didn't appear on the Billboard 200 until November. It bounced around the charts for the early part of 2009, but then cracked the top 10 in March upon the strength of her first U.S. hit, "Just Dance," and only built from there.

GaGa recently became the third artist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart to have three No. 1 singles from a debut album. She has the Nos. 3, 4 and 26 top-selling digital songs of the year, with "Poker Face"selling 3.6 million, "Just Dance" moving 2.6 million and "LoveGame" selling 1.4 million. In total, she has sold more than 10.7 million tracks.

She also has the Nos. 2 and 8 best-selling digital songs of all time: "Just Dance" (4.4 million) and "Poker Face" (3.8 million), respectively. "The Fame" is also the fifth-best-selling album (1.1 million) for the year and the best-selling set from a debut artist for 2009.

"We always just assumed we were going to sell records," GaGa says. "I have a sense of optimism and liberation, despite the state of the industry and the economy. We function like the industry is in full bloom, and that audacity works for us."

GaGa had to wait to hit those sales records in the United States, though, breaking first in Canada and then in Australia. "She had the theme song for 'Australia's Next Top Model,' which helped her over there," Gerson says. "But in America, we had to let her percolate for a while. 'Just Dance' was the big hit here and in the U.K., and the momentum hasn't slowed since."

She has also toured nonstop, starting off opening for labelmates New Kids on the Block, then headlining her own Fame Ball tour. And while the term is usually gleefully pejorative, Herbert explains that in this case, it has nothing to do with publicity-seeking media wannabes.

"We wanted it to look like a prom, with photo booths and a theme," he says. "We wanted people to think they were coming to a ball and to have an experience rather than just passively watching a concert. When she played Terminal 5 in New York, Madonna came and brought her daughter, and they didn't take their eyes off her the entire time."

The emphasis on themes and over-the-top visual elements is also present in GaGa's videos, including the clip for "Paparazzi," which she herself describes as a "creative orgasm." She adds that her Haus of GaGa collective, which includes producer Ron Fair and creative director Matthew Williams, "art-direct me in my sleep."

GaGa names as her inspirations people like Klaus Nomi and Andy Warhol, who she says saw themselves as living their roles. "There is no sense of duality when it comes to who I am. It's not a play-acting thing for me. When I did the Rolling Stone cover shoot, I said I wanted to be shot as the rock goddess I know I'd eventually be."

GaGa will have a chance to prove her star power when she opens for Kanye West later this year. And she can guarantee one thing-her closet will remain locked to the infamously stylish and demanding star. "If Kanye tries to wear my clothes, I'll kick his ass," she says with a laugh.

When the 'secret' of the Colonel's blend of herbs and spices was revealed, we had to test the recipe - and then see if it could be bettered ...

Tim fries up a challenge to the Colonel.

Woody Allen once opined that sex is like pizza - even when it's rubbish it's pretty damn good. I feel the same way about fried chicken. The truth is, it would take effort and skill to screw up succulent chicken meat, dredged in seasoned flour and cooked in boiling fat. Like many other foodies I have a problem with the moral implications of KFC's chicken meat but I can't, with my hand on my (rapidly congesting) heart, say it doesn't taste pretty good when fresh from the bucket.

But I'm lucky enough to also have sampled the real thing. I lived for several years in rural North Carolina and married a local girl. The reception was held on a hot summer evening, on the banks of a sleepy river on the family farm and was a pot-luck affair. In the course of the evening a couple of hundred people turned up, most carrying trays covered in a cloth and containing a personal variation on fried chicken.

Your personal 'secret recipe' for fried chicken is a pretty serious business in the South, and a newbie outsider like me could be forgiven for believing that all those family reunions, church picnics, barbecues and tailgate parties were just a front for a bitterly fought and endless competition to produce better and better fried chicken. I personally reckon the world would be a much better place if we all got together every now and again in a 'healthy' competition over fried chicken. It sublimates family tensions, draws communities together and generally makes it socially acceptable to eat like a starved weasel in the name of politeness. An online competitive chicken fry-off, then? Bring it on.

Thanks to a huge response from WoM posters we were able, once again, to revisit the endlessly fascinating moral arguments surrounding the eating of animals. We were also able work out a sensible method of home cooking fried chicken, and devise a convincingly British spicing mix.

Lacking KFC's mighty pressure fryers and mindful of the need to cook the chicken right through, we were happy to follow the suggestions of double cooking. Most recommended some time in the oven after frying, but we thought we'd experiment with poaching beforehand and, as many of our posters suggested an overnight marinade in milk, we decided to use the marinade as the poaching liquid. It's worth noting for future recipes that chicken marinaded and poached in milk has an unbelievably suave flavour and texture, and that the poaching liquid thickens to create the most soothing cream of chicken soup I've ever achieved.

We made up two batches of seasoned flour, using Ron Douglas's 'KFC' mix and our own Guardian crowdsourced version - let's call it 'GFC' - and fried sample pieces of the poached chicken dredged in each.

'KFC' mix
1 teaspoon ground oregano
1 teaspoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon ground sage
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons Accent (MSG)

GFC mix
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp sage
1 tsp celery seeds
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dried onion flakes
2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground white pepper

I'm not going to lie to you. If your paper gives you moral carte blanche to wolf it down in the name of research, and when it's hot and fresh from the bucket, KFC is gorgeous. I haven't eaten chain fast food for a long time and the combined hit of chicken, fat and flavour was disorientatingly powerful. It's the sort of comprehensive sensory seeing-to that's both best and worst about drink, drugs and sex. So very good and so very bad. No wonder teenagers live on this stuff. But trying to apply any kind of critical approach to the flavour was surprisingly hard. I can't tell you what that famous mixture of 11 secret herbs and spices actually tastes of, because I couldn't distinguish any particular flavours amid the assault.

Cooking from scratch enables us to do two things that the Colonel can't: use great chicken and drain the grease more efficiently. This gave us a real head start, and the results were stunning. A single bite of the homemade KFC is enough. It's like biting into a dew-fresh ripe peach after eating a canned one. It's obviously the same thing but an order of magnitude better. As before, none of the flavours predominated enough to be identifiable but, having made up the mix from scratch, we now know the secret. Herbs and spices be damned, that staggering, mouthfilling, umami facepunch of a flavour is down to the two tablespoonfuls of MSG.

GFC, our own mix, was very, very good. Nice flavours, well chosen and matched. It's refined, elegant and I'd proudly serve it at a family picnic. An elegant Southern church lady would gladly remove a cotton glove to pick up an MSG-free GFC drumstick. She would compliment us on our British reserve, our eccentric quirkiness and our general pluck, but as far as stimulating the senses goes, she'd politely opine, "why, it's like comparing iced tea and crystal meth"

Outgames international gay sport and culture event opens in Copenhagen

Celebration of gay sport and culture with a focus on human rights in homophobic countries begins this weekend...

There will be triathlon and handball – but also bridge and line dancing.

Handball? Is that an eupahmism for somthing else? LOL

Copenhagen is preparing for thousands of gay people from dozens of nations to descend this weekend for the Outgames, a nine-day sporting and cultural olympics for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Transgender, Bridge-playing Triathletes? It just get's better!

When the 5,500 participants are introduced on a catwalk in Copenhagen's central square today, it will kickstart nine days of sport, arts and political debates with almost 100 nations represented in more than 30 events, traditional and improvised.

But the event is about much more than podium places. The Outgames has launched itself under the banner of sport, culture and human rights. Participants from a host of cities, including Tel Aviv and Mexico City, will take over public spaces throughout Copenhagen to showcase artists and performers.

At the centre of the political programme is a human rights conference, where speakers include the British basketball player and sports commentator John Amaechi, the first NBA player to have come out.

On the fringe of the games, the people of Copenhagen have been encouraged to embrace the event and play an active role. At the main library you can "take out a gay" for a half-hour chat after you've scanned his or her barcode, while many of the participants are staying in private homes throughout the city.

Jesus, your kidding, right? "take out a gay" is quite possibly the WORST form of degradation I have ever heard

The director of the Outgames, Uffe Elbæk, hopes the Copenhagen event will attract people from countries where gay people still face imprisonment and the organisers have funded the journey to Copenhagen for 250 participants from Asia, Latin America and Africa.

"The world is coming to Copenhagen, and we have worked towards our goal of ensuring that participants from places such as Africa, Asia and not least the Middle East have the opportunity to come to Copenhagen for the Outgames," he said.

Elbæk sees the games as not just a celebration for the LGBT community, but a global event, highlighting that gay people are still criminalised in a third of the countries represented.

And yet you can hire a poof for 30 minutes? The irony!

"We want to make this top priority and put the focus on human rights," he said.

un-sung heros of dance music.

Peyton joins me in the studio for a really frank chat about his journey so far. How coming out to his Celebrity Pastor father, and massively religious mother was supposed to be one of the most traumatic experiences, he was pleasntly suprised!

His parents joined him on the Freemasons fload at Gay Mardi Gras this year in Australia, and was obviously a really poinant moment for him.

I also ask him what it was like growing up, and how he realised he wanted to sing for a career.

He finishes the interview with 2 acapella versions of one of the most beautiful tracks he has ever written "All That Mattered" which he wrote after a love affair in Egypt.

Multiple sources in the Jackson family have stated -- even if Katherine Jackson gets custody of Michael Jackson's kids -- Michael's big sister Rebbie Jackson will raise the children.

Rebbie? Who the hell is Rebbie?!

The 59-year-old singer, who shares a home in Las Vegas with her hubby of over 20 years, has kept a low public profile, but privately she has been deeply involved in the lives of Michael's children.

We're told Rebbie is currently living with Katherine at the family's Encino home and is caring for the kids day-to-day. As for the kids ... they all adore her.

Although the family is divided on many issues involving Michael's estate, we're told there's no argument when it comes to Rebbie caring for the kids. Whether she eventually becomes the custodial parent in name or not, she will end up with the primary responsibility of raising Michael's three children.

Laurence Malice: the interview

I've been waiting to share this for some time, and over London Pride weekend and Trade's exciting move to Ministry of Sound, it only seemed appropriate to share this now.

A little over a year ago, clubbing legend Laurence Malice came to visit me on my then show for his first radio interview in 10 years ahead of the untimely departure of the then Turnmills club in Clerkenwell.

What happened was a candid chat, where Laurence Malice revealed lots of myths surrounding the club. The Club that pioneered with everything from music pollcy, to DJs and let's not forget the Trademark artwork and Madonna turning up at it's doors.

Manslaughter Cited in Dr. Murray Warrant

Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyer, Ed Chernoff, just released a statement about today's raid at the doc's office -- saying law enforcement officials were searching for evidence "of the offense of manslaughter."

"We can confirm that a search warrant was executed today on Dr. Murray's offices in Houston, Texas. We reviewed the warrant and remained on the premises while the search was being executed.

The search was conducted by members of the DEA, two Robbery – Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department and Houston Police officers.

The search warrant authorized law enforcement to search for and seize items, including documents, they believed constituted evidence of the offense of manslaughter.

Law enforcement concluded their search around 12:30pm, and left with a forensic image of a business computer hard drive and 21 documents. None of the documents taken had previously been requested by law enforcement or the L.A. Coroner's office."

... for 2009's best album have been announced...,

and the list features the eclectic lineup of newcomers, chart stars and unknowns the prestigious award has become known for.

Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and Bat for Lashes are the favourites to walk away with the £20,000 prize, voted for by a panel of critics and music industry figures. Synth-pop duo La Roux and Scottish indie-rock quartet Glasvegas are also hotly tipped.

Among the lesser-known artists are south London rapper Speech Debelle and art-rock trio the Invisible, while eccentric quintet Led Bib and folk group Sweet Billy Pilgrim make up the more leftfield nominations.

Typically for the Mercury prize, the omissions are as surprising as the artists that made the final cut. Both Lily Allen (who was also overlooked for her 2006 debut album Alright, Still) and Manchester group Doves were rumoured to be odds on to win, but neither have been nominated.

The Mercury prize was established in 1992 as an alternative to the more commercially minded Brit awards. A panel of industry experts, including journalists, musicians and independent-label executives, debate the merits of what they believe to be the finest British albums from the past year, regardless of sales or radio play. Previous winners include Portishead, PJ Harvey and Arctic Monkeys.

But the Mercury prize's reputation as an awards ceremony that celebrates quality over sales has come in for a bashing in recent years as the prize itself grows in stature. "I think there's a tendency for a knee-jerk negative reaction to the Mercury nominations – to see what's not on the list, what they've missed out," said the Guardian's chief pop critic Alexis Petridis. "The whole concept behind the shortlist is really nebulous. Is it artistic endeavour? Or is it a degree of commercial success, because there's certainly never any outright commercial flops on the list?" Petridis continues: "There's not a vast amount in the way of dance or urban music, nor are there artists with any kind of lengthy history. I'm not sure what happened to Manic Street Preachers' nomination, but there you go."

As for Lily Allen and that phantom nomination, the singer has already taken to her Twitter page to say, "I hope La Roux wins". Lily Allen has also been snubbed from the Mercury Awards for the last years!

The winner of this year's award will be announced on 8 September 2009.

It's taken me so long to sort this blog, sorry!

I've been a DJ and radio presenter for many many years, and think I can bring a wealth of knowledge to this blog. OK, that's the plan anyway!

As well as upfront tracks, I'll also be loading classsics that still work on many levels, guess you could say they were way ahead of their time when they were originally released.

Due to the nature of some of the tracks, I'll won't be loading the full tracks. However, I will endeavour to include networking sites for the artists/producers so you can request a copy for yourselves.

To kick thing's off, I thought I would start in style. If you have ever been to Trade at Turnmills, then you will love this DJ mix. I discovered Trade over 10 years ago and never looked back. After 18 years, Trade is still going strong, and like all good iconic clubs, has evolved to reflect current music trends. Although, remaining true to it's unique music policy by always supplying a tough "classics" room which is where I will be playing on July 5th at Ministry of Sound.
